Postmodern theories of artmaking recognise that all new things are created from modifications of what came before. You too can create something novel by manipulating the known.  To help you with this try SCAMPER.

  â€‹

SCAMPER is a thinking framework that gives you a series of verbs that inspire direction in the creative process. Each letter of SCAMPER represents an action.  Here they are below:

S: Substitute What element of an existing idea can you substitute for something that is more meaningful to you?

C: Combine What elements of multiple existing ideas can you combine in novel ways?

A; Adapt Can you adapt an existing idea into another form or style?

M:  Modify What happens if you enlarge or shrink parts of an existing idea?

P:  Put to other uses What alternative functions might an existing object or idea offer?

E: Eliminate How would the meaning of an idea change if certain elements were removed?

R: Reverse What would happen if the expected order of elements in an existing idea were reversed?
